Born Wicked By: Jessica Spotswood

Born Wicked
Pages: 330
Rating: 4/5

Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they're witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word...especially after she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren't safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.

Born Wicked is the first book in The Cahill Witch Chronicles by Jessica Spotswood. The book revolves around three sisters  (Cate, Maura, and Tess) that are actually "witches in disguise."  Their powers and relationships gradually grow throughout the book- causing more than a few issues to arise.

What I Loved...

Although Born Wicked is focused on witchery (a typical storyline for Y.A. books) it had such a uniqueness to it. I absolutely fell in love with the time period the book was set in- where one would be expected to host tea parties and present themselves in a certain way. Most Y.A. books are usually set in more modern times, making it refreshing to read something new. I have to say that by the end of this book I was highly tempted to go buy a fancy dress and bat my eyes or something girl-y like that. *starts to practise batting eyelashes* Or not....that's good to...

What's a story without a love triangle, right? We definitely get one of those in Born Wicked. When Cate is in the middle of figuring out the options she has for the future, Paul (her best friend) comes back to town in hopes of winning over her heart. But Cate's heart starts to be stolen by another- the dashing gardener Finn Belastra (hubba ,hubba). Hands down I think there's A LOT more chemistry between Cate and Finn then there is with Cate and Paul. Plus, Finn manages a bookstore.... what is hotter than a guy surrounded by books? Can I say bonus points bookworms?!

The relationship between Cate, Maura, and Tess was really enjoyable to read. Jessica Spotswood did a really good job of showing the things that were going on with Maura and Tess' lives even though the book was completely in Cate's POV.

What I Didn't Like....

Elena......That's all I'm going to say, shivers.

The love triangle in this story was a good start but I felt it was a bit one sided. And when I say that I mean that I felt we got more exposure to Cate and Finn then we did to Cate and Paul. Paul was kind of put aside towards the end of the book and Cate never even considered him when she was *spoiler alert* making plans for the future with Finn. I kinda-sorta forgot about Paul until he was mentioned again in the last scene...oops, sorry Paul...

The Cover and Book Trailer...

Born Wicked was one of the best publicized book I've seen in a long time. Both the cover and book trailer blew me away, and are essentially the reason I picked this book up last week. The cover has a dark-spring look that immediately drew me in! The book trailer was and still is, I think, the best book trailer I've ever seen. They picked a perfect actress to play Cate and the trailer wasn't overly cheesy (the way most book trailers can be). Don't you love how they included the feathers in the trailer?! The cover and trailer is what made the book go from a 3.5/5 to a 4/5. Be sure to check it out below!

Favourite Quotes...

““Well, don’t murder my flowers,” I mutter, running a protec-tive hand over a bush of pink tea roses. Finn laughs. “I’ll do my best. Good day, Miss Cahill.”” -Cate and Finn

“"He reaches out to steady me, a book tumbling from his hand, and that's how I recognize him: Finn Belastra. Of course he would have his nose in a book, though how he can see to read in the dusk I don't know..." -Cate

Overall...

Overall Born Wicked was a very good read, and I'm looking forward to the second. If you love reading about witchery, romance, and the power of family then this is definitely for you. I know this book has received some mixed reviews so let me know what your thoughts of the book were- I look forward to hearing them! For those of you who haven't read Born Wicked, you can read the first two chapters here! Keep Reading!

  1. I find this book very interesting and I loved the summary you gave. I remember that I took the best coursework help UK based for writing a book summary of our course. The writer actually wrote something extraordinary that made my impression solid over my classmates and teacher. She got so happy with the content that she even gave me a treat. Likewise, I will love to give you a treat if you’re in the UK because I want to hear more from you on some books that I’ll recommend.
