***UPDATE 8/23/2012: Please be aware that after reading the second book, my opinions on Existence have GREATLY changed. My opinions in this review are quite different from my current views.***

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.

Pagan Moore doesn’t cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn’t let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks.  Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn’t realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with, is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

Existence is the first book to the Existence Trilogy by Abbi Grines. I actually purchased this book on my IPad after reading all the great reviews it got on Amazon. In all honesty, I was disappointed. Giving this book a 3/5 was stretching it for me.

The whole "romance" aspect of his book was incredibly confusing to me. For one, Pagan literally talks to..... *looks up guys name*.....DANK.....right, I knew that! So as I was saying, Pagan literally talk to Dank for like two seconds and is suddenly madly in love with him. Is she on glue?!  You don't just fall in love with death....no....something incredible has to happen before you can forget that Death is stalking you. Usually when Death stalks you....it's not a good sign, just saying. Of course I understood her initial attraction to him because he's, like, hot, but Pagan goes from referring to Dank as a stalker to "the guy I love." Righttt...

I also hate, hate, hated how Pagan strung along poor Leif for practically the entire friggen book. Sigh. I just couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that Pagan "couldn't" break up with Leif even though she knew very well she was in love with Dank. Especially once Leif started admitting he had serious feeling for her. Honestly, I felt bad for Leif every time he confessed his love to Pagan. She never discouraged him in any way- she just let him keep loving her. I usually never feel bad for "the other guy" but in Existence I did....although that could very well change from reading the last line in this book. It's too bad, I really like Leif :(

Pagan also confused the bejeezes out of me, especially when she did some paricularly stupid things. A great example is when it came to Pagan agreeing to visit some sort of mental institution. What is her reasoning for allowing that to happen? Because it would make her mom feel better. Do you know any teenagers that would say "sure mom, you can lock me up if you want. As long as it makes YOU feel better!" ......What? No! No teenager would say that.....it's madness I tell you....pure madness.....*dramatic sigh*

The most redeemable part of the book was the cliff hanger it left us with at the end. It was a great way to pull readers into the next book. I'm actually very interested in reading book two just to have the last line explained to me.

The Cover...

Dayummm for such an ehh book, it had a pretty hot cover. Dank has this alluring look that just totally pulled me in. I mean, c'mon, look at those eyes of his. Mmmmm I am loving those eyes. Cover = success!

Favourite Quotes...

“Um,i'm going shopping for a dress for the Homecoming Dance with Miranda,Wyatt and Leif."
Dank chuckled."So,Leif's wearing a dress?”  -Pagan, Dank

Leif's frown eased and he slid his finger under my chin and gently caressed my jaw line with the pad of his thumb.
"Pagan, will you do me the honor of being my date for Homecoming Dance? The prospect of not being able to hold you in my arms all night is heartbreaking."
Miranda sighed from across the table.
"Okay, that was beautiful. Why didn't you ask me like that?"she asked Wyatt.
Wyatt shot Leif an annoyed frown.
"Thanks, buddy.Next time you decide to break out your romantic side, could you do it alone?”
-Leif, Miranda, Wyatt

Overall...

I hate to disappoint/anger any of you Existence fans (because I know there's a lot of you) with all my complaints. If you loved or hated Existence let me know in the comments- I'd love to hear your OWN thoughts on the book.  PREDESTINED (book two) comes out April 3, 2012- yay! I'm actually really looking forward to the second book even though I'm not totally in love with Existence. It should be an interesting read and I'm looking forward to seeing Pagan and Dank's relationship grow. Be sure to check out extras Abbi Glines posted on her website of Dank POVs here! Keep Reading!
