Surrender By: Lee Nichols

Surrender (Book #3 Haunting Emma)
Author: Lee Nichols
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Pages: 272
Rating: 3.5/5

After a devastating battle at headquarters in New York, the ghostkeeping world is in shambles. Emma and Bennett are finally a solid team—that is until Bennett's parents kick him out, leaving Emma feeling more alone than ever.
The only way to save her relationship—and the ghostkeeping world—is to defeat Neos forever. But the wraith master attacks Thatcher Academy. If Neos and his ghosts manage to possess the entire school, Emma won't be strong enough to stop them. Though if she or Bennett sacrifices their power, they might be able to end Neos's reign once and for all and finally be together.
The question is: who will be the one to surrender?
SURRENDER is the third and final instalment in Lee Nicols' Haunting Emma Series. When I read the first book, Deception, I immediately fell in love with the world Nichols created. In the second book, Betrayal, I found that Nichols delivered a "good" sequel. With Surrender I was a bit disappointed- and it kills me to say it. I really, really, wanted to fall in love with Surrender but it fell short in a few places.
For one, the romance in this book was, in a word, lacking. In BETRAYAL Bennett was absent for a majority of the book and I found myself really missing him. *Boo* In Surrender, I was desperate for more intimate moments between Bennett and Emma. Again, Bennett wasn't as involved in the story and when he was, he seemed distracted and detached. Why Bennett? Why?!
The conclusion. The end. The last battle. Whatever you want to call it- I was upset. The "epic battle" that has been building between Emma and Neos was not so epic. Ehh is a better word to describe it. "Disappointing" is good to. The destruction of Neos was so fast that I seriously almost missed it while I was reading in my sleepy-state last night. Personally, I was expecting more for such a monumental moment in the story......
The appearance of Emma's family almost passed by me as well. For two books we've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Emma's parents and the mystery for why they disappeared. Again, I felt this huge anticipation fell short. Aside from Emma's parents making their "grand-entrance" to Emma while she was, in other words, preoccupied with Bennett- there wasn't much drama from their sudden appearance.
That being said, not all was bad in SURRENDER. Actually, I quite enjoyed reading Emma's interactions with the "family" she has received- ghosts, humans, and all. Each book I feel like I'm returning to my friends because of the sense of love that is seen in every conversation (I mean, who doesn't love Celeste and all of the other friendly ghosts?!) Ze Iz Magnefique! Zno?
The Cover...
Like all Haunting Emma books, Emma is the main focus on the cover. What I love about this particular cover is the way we can actually see Emma's sly badasse attitude. Throughout the three books Emma's character has really grown emotionally and physically- and this cover shows that.
Favourite Quotes...
"There you are," my mother said.                                                                                                                 "Yeah," I said. "I'm the one who's hard to track down." -Emma's Mom, Emma
"Have I told you how much I love those pajamas?" -Bennett
"You don't need to compel her to do things. You can just ask."                                                             "I'm sure Celeste doesn't mind, Emma," she said, a little flustered.                                                            "Celeste wouldn't mind if you used her as a footstool. That doesn't make it okay."-Emma, Mrs.Stern
"Really? And here I thought you had everything," I teased.                                                                       There was intent, knowing look on his face as he gently pulled me toward him.                                   "The only thing I want is you." -Emma, Bennett
Overall...
Overall Surrender was a good finale to a series I will always treasure. Yes, it could have been better, but I've read many other books that end their series way worse (last book of Strange Angels anyone??). If you've read the previous Haunting Emma novels than I definitely recommend putting SURRENDER on your To-Read list. I highly recommend the series to you bookworms that want a book with ghosts, a powerful heroine and a sweet romance! I'm so glad to have been able to read about Emma's journey these past couple of years. So with that I say "Ze Bye Emma" XOXO Keep Reading!
Your YA Bookworm,
Caitlin <3

  8. "Surrender" is the conclusion to The Haunting Emma Trilogy. Emma started the series thinking she was normal not knowing about her powers or the world that she was born into. She has grown into a powerful Ghostkeeper. Once I had a task to write an essay on this book. I was busy, so I decided to get essay help at best-essays-writers.com. They have cool
