The Immortal Rules By: Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 512
Rating: 5/5

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

The Immortal Rules is the first instalment in the eagerly awaited Blood of Eden Series by the wonderful, friggen fantastic Julie Kagawa!  Many of you (I hope) might recognize this author as being the genius behind The Iron Fey Series. I read all of the Iron Fey books just a few months ago and I absolutely loved them- Team Ash all the way ;) Anyhoo, I was so excited to get my hands on The Immortal Rules, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

The Immortal Rules is a complete vampire focused book. Now to all of you that are thinking "Ughh, come on Caitlin, another Twilight?!" I am telling you right now that one, don't hate on Twilight and more importantly, number two, this is not your typical vampire book. The Immortal Rules brings something completely new to the "vampire Y.A. world." Vampires are not friendly in this book.  They don't drink animal blood, they don't walk in the sunlight with a special ring, or sparkle like a disco ball. No. These vamps are terrifying, hungry, and completely bad-ass.

The main character, Allison, is a very strong (emotionally and....well, definitely physically) female character.  Both as a human and vampire, Allison is always trying to do what is right. She's sensible and smart- making decisions for more logical than emotional reasons. Although sometimes she can come across as harsh (especially in Part 1 as a human), Allison really grew on me by the end of the book.

Usually, the romance in a book is like fuel to me- if there's none, the reading doesn't happen. Yes, in The Immortal Rules there is definitely a budding love story but it definitely isn't what the story solely focuses on. In the Iron Fey series, the love triangle was a very important part of the story, but in The Immortal Rules the "ooh-la-la" was more like an added bonus. A very great bonus if I do say so myself. Kagawa presented the connection between Allison and Zeke in such a tasteful way that I was literally shaking the book for more! I'm really looking forward to seeing how Julie Kagawa is going to make this relationship work *fingers crossed* I'm rootin' for ya Allison and Zeke!

The Cover and Book Trailer...

I am a huge fan of this cover. Not only does it capture your eye but it's darkness represents the book perfectly. I'm loving the red eyes and blood tears *shivers* so vampirey :P  The Book trailer is also fantastic. I don't know about you guys, but I was watching it quite a bit as I geared up for the release date. Check out the trailer below!

Favourite Quotes...

“The mighty hunter,” I quipped as we snuck out the backdoor, escaping into the yard. “He can take down viciousrabids and rampaging boars, but one old lady can make him flee in terror.”

“One scary old lady,” he corrected me, looking relieved to be out of the house. “You didn’t hear what she told me when I got up— you’re so cute I could put you in a pie. Tell me that’s not the creepiest thing you’ve ever heard.” His voice climbed a few octaves, turning shrill and breathy. “Today for dessert, we have apple pie, blueberry pie and Ezekiel pie.”

-Allison and Zeke

Did he teach you how to bore you opponents to sleep? Because I think I missed that lesson"
-Allison

“I wasn't thinking of his blood, rushing just below the skin. I wasn't thinking of his heartbeat or his touch or the pulse at his throat. Right now, all I was thinking of was Zeke.”
-Allison

Overall...

Overall I was completely drawn to The Immortal Rules. I'm definitely a vampire fanatic, and The Immortal Rules was the perfect read for me. Although there are a lot of fabulous vampire books out there, I think you need to read this one, it is seriously "darker" than most.  Julie Kagawa also has another Iron Fey trilogy coming out later this Fall!! The first book, The Lost Prince, focuses on Meghan Chase's brother, Ethan. Although no details have been released, Julie Kagawa has said on her website that there will be some "familiar faces" making cameos.....Eeeep....hopefully we'll get to see Meghan, Ash, Puck, and of course GRIMALKIN! If you haven't already, The Iron Fey is another series I recommend you all read! Let me know your thoughts on the book and be sure to follow me through this blog and on twitter! Keep Reading!

Your Y.A. Bookworm,
Caitlin <3
