Review: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Onyx (Obsidian #2)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pages: 376
Rating: 5/5

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…
     Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.
Something worse than the Arum has come to town…
     The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.
But then everything changes…
   I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

   Onyx is the second instalment in the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. When I read Obsidian earlier this year, I completely fell in love with the world Jennifer created.....and Daemon ;) The romance was hot, the story was fantastic, and it had a smokin' hot alien, whats not to love?! Now, this love I had for Obisidan unsurprisingly made me very anxious for book two, but it also had me feeling nervous. The minute I sat down to read Onyx, worry started creeping in- would Onyx be able to meet the high expectations I had for it? To put it simply, my doubt was stupid because Jennifer Armentrout proved once again  that she is a writing queen! Onyx was even better than Obsidian- and that's saying something!!

   Onyx takes place after the events that occurred in Obsidian. Katy is trying to stay away from Daemon after discovering their new-found connection, while Daemon is persistently trying to convince Katy that he has genuine feelings for her [insert "awwww" here].  While trying to keep Daemon out of her thoughts, Katy begins to have strange symptoms that lead to a discovery of her own that no one expects. Jaws will drop, eyes will widen, and some might even run around in shocked-craze :P The pace of the book, and the addicting plot will make it impossible for you to stop reading- you've been warned!

   Of course what everyone wants to hear about is the romance between Daemon and Katy. When comparing the couple from Obsidian to Onyx, I found that there was a clear difference. Unlike Obsidian where Daemon and Katy's chemistry could be described as hot, in Onyx it can be described as beautiful. Their witty banter and sizzling make-outs are amplified to 10x more swooning perfection!! When they weren't slashing each other's throats or practically ripping each other's clothes off, there were some sweet and vulnerable scenes  the both of them shared [insert extra dose of "awwww" here]! This element added the depth into their relationship that wasn't in the first book. The end of the book will sure have Daemon and Katy fans squealing everywhere *fangirl squeal* #TeamDaemon&KatyForTheSwoon =D I'm also thinking of investing in a pair of knee high socks ....I feel inspired my a particular scene ;) !

   I continued to adore my fellow book blogger Katy. I loved seeing her able try to resist Daemon and continue her bookworm love ways. (There's actually a cute scene where Katy and Daemon do a video book haul- can I say adorable?!) There's even a part where Katy mentions Tod from the Soul Screamers Series! I found it so cool to see one of my favourite fictional females talk about how much she loved one of my favourite fictional males (which is a list of pretty much any guy that's made me swoon- I know, I'm easy to please :P)! Although there were times where I felt like seriously shaking Katy, she continues to be one of my favourite heroines !

   A new character named Blake was also introduced in Onyx. Blake's arrival allowed for many laugh-out-loud male "bickering" between Deamon and Blake (And may I just add, Daemon's hot when he's jealous!) Although there's a bit of a love triangle that goes on, it didn't bother me because it's pretty clear where Katy's heart is most of the time- no need to worry!

   The ending left us with a shocking, but not so shocking arrival of a very important character. It may not be a tortuous cliff-hanger, but it does leave you looking around like crazy person for book three "Where is it?!" *looks around room**twitch* *lifts pillow* "Where is it?! I need it NOW!" *twitch* *twitch*

Favourite Quotes...

"She kind of wen alien ninja on my butt." Feeling too warm, I grabbed a hair tie and twisted my hair up. "She threw me against the wall."
His eyebrows shot up in interest.
I rolled my eyes. "Not in that way, you perv."

~~~~~
With the sun setting outside, I wrote a quick review for Monday and then a longer one for Tuesday. The longer one was because I couldn't stop gushing. I think I had a new book boyfriend and his name was Tod. Yumtastic.
~~~~~

"Sure. Whatever. She’s all yours.”
Daemon grinned. “That she is.”
My hand was twitching to connect with his face. “I am not yours.” A small part of me wanted him to deny my words, though.
“Shush it,” he said, walking up to me.
“How about I shush it right up you—“
“Kitten, your language is so unladylike.”

~~~~~
“Say it."
"Say what?"
"Tell me what you told me earlier."
"I love you."
"That's all I ever need to hear."
"Those three words?"
"Always those three words.”
Overall...
   Overall Onyx was a laptop blowing and swoontastic sequel to one of my favourite series! Katy explains it perfectly, "Mesmerizing sequel, heart-stopping action, and swoon-worthy romance, Onyx is a forget-your-homework, don't-feed-your-kids, and quit-your-job, one-sit-read!" If you haven't heard of the Lux series before then be sure to read my review of Obsidian (Book #1) HERE! Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of the very few authors that has made me fall head-over-heals for every book she's written! Her new book, Cursed, comes out September 18,2012 so be sure to look out for my review! The epic conclusion to the Lux series, Opal (Book #3) comes out December 11, 2012- so there's lots of sizzle coming our way! What did you think of Onyx? Are you excited for Opal? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Keep Reading!
Caitlin <3
  4. Yes, I completely agree with you. I definitely can't wait for the next installment of the Lux series. December can't get here soon enough - and that is saying something coming from me. I live in one of the snowiest cities in the U.S. and I never in a hurry for winter to get here. But if it means I can get my hands on Opal, then bring on the snow!
