The One By: Heather Self Review

The One
Author: Heather Self
Pages: 282
Rating: 4/5

Stranded on Earth two thousand years they’ve waited for the arrival of the One: some to save her, others to kill her. With her birth, the ancient prophecy could at last be fulfilled and the doorway between the worlds would open. Those who know the prophecy believe this event occurred almost eighteen years ago, and now, they’ll stop at nothing to find her.

Seventeen-year-old Eveline has lived her entire life on the move and she hates it. She knows her parents believe she’s the One, and they’ve done whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of those who want her dead. But Eveline isn’t fully convinced that her parents’ beliefs match her own. What she does believe is that Leadville, Colorado may be the chance she’s been waiting for. The chance to be somewhere safe. The chance for her to make friends and have fun. The chance to finally date a guy. The chance to be a normal girl, at least as normal as possible for someone not human.

   The One is the first instalment in The Portal Trilogy by author Heather Self. I stumbled upon this book while I was browsing away on Valerie's blog Stuck In Books- the post was called "Eve and Chase from THE ONE review Obsidian". Although I had not heard of The One before, seeing Obsidian in the title roped me right in- and I'm so glad it did! Without that post, I may have never gotten the privilege of reading this fantastic and hot novel! The One should be on everyone's to-be-read list :)

   Evy and her parents have spent years running away from the Nerada. Being a Kin (aka. dragon) that possess all four elemental powers has made Evy predicted to be the One, and as she approaches her transition, the target on her back grows larger. As she and her family settle down in Leadville, Evy is forced to handle the duty that is expected of her, a discovery of a long lost family member, and the struggle of deciding between two boys she can't help but be attracted to. Evy's character was for the most part very enjoyable. Her sense of humor and determination made her a strong character that I think many readers will connect with.

   Of course, what's a book without a few smokin' males- and yes, I said males.....as in plural hotness *cheers for plural-ness* We are first introduced to the protective Liam. The relationship between the newly found siblings was adorable and flippin hilarious! I loved any scene with Liam in it! My favourite character by far was Chase *sighs* The chemistry between this sexy Australian and Evy was the type of hotness that will have you giggling and smiling. I can't wait to see what  moves Chase will pull in an attempt to win Evy over-  I'm sure it will bring some more awesome swooning! The last hottie in this novel is Kieran. Although I'm sure many girls will fall in love with this bold and swoon worthy character- he was my least favourite character of the book (probably because he's a major threat to my hope of a Chase and Evy duo)! I think if his character would have been introduced a little bit earlier on, and if there wasn't a major insta-love thing between him and Evy, I could have liked his character. But for now, I'm Team Chase forever :P

   The only thing I wish was different about this book was the climax. The highest, most exciting part of the book happened a little to late, and a little to quickly in my opinion. Having Evy not even part of the "fight sequence" made the scene lack intensity. Not to mention that I would think having Evy come face to face with a Nerada would be the perfect way for her to see how dangerous they really are- I think Evy needs that fire in her. That being said, the ending left us with quite an unexpected discovery that I'm looking forward to unravelling in book two!

Favourite Quotes...

I extended my hand to Chase, "Eveline Sophia Fallon, daughter of Brennan and Mina, sister of Gaurdian and supposedly the One." His chuckle was low and sexy and caused a tremor to course through me. I fought to keep my hand steady so he wouldn't see the way he affected me. Liam stiffened beside me but for once said nothing.

Chase inclined his head haughtily, playing along. "Chase Andrew Alexander err...Smith, at least for now. Son of Gabriel, elder brother of Guardian and Jennavieve. No relations to the, 'supposed' One. Thank goodness," he grinned wickedly then bowed slightly.

~~~~~~
"Well, you're going to have to put your arms around me. Then hold on really tight. You may want to close your eyes too."
"All that is for transporting?"
"Was there something else you'd prefer to be doing?"
Fortunately, Dad intervened before I could respond to his comment. "Really, Chase? Still in the room here. That's my daughter you're flirting with. You really want to go there?"
~~~~~~

I rolled my eyes and stepped away from Chase. "I'd really like to be kept out of the pissing contest boys. I'm not a bone for the two of you to fight over like dogs. We have things to discuss and need Liam and Jenna here to do it. I have somewhere to be later and I'm not going to let the two of you ruin my evening with your childishness. We clear?"

I bounced my gaze back and forth between the two of them before receiving affirmative nods from them both.
Kieran couldn't leave it at that though and had to comment, "That whole take charge put us in our place thing was totally hot, Evy. Right?" He looked to Chase for agreement who rolled his eyes at Kieran but winked at me before disappearing.

Overall...

  Overall The One was a fun, light and swoon-worthy novel that all bookworms will love- it definitely deserves more exposure so be sure to spread the word! I can't wait for the release of book two! Have you read The One yet? Team Chase or Team Kieran? Be sure to let me know in the comments! Keep Reading!

  2. Caitlin! I ADORE this review, and absoultely agree with your critique. Some of it was done on purpose *insert evil author laughter here* and some I totally kicked myself for later. ;) I may change your mind about Kieran, though. His novella will be out end of November. Thanks again for the lovely review and for reading!

  3. Kind of Team Kieran, but I'm torn. He was forthright about his feelings which I appreciated and the whole dreaming about her thing for his whole life made it not insta-love (though just barely) in my opinion. I'm so excited about the next book as well. I hate reading books in a series while they're still being written.

    1. I do have to agree with you, Kieran's straight forward attitude was nice to see. I think I'm going to stick with Team Chase though :P Reading books while they're being written is frustrating, but it makes getting the next book in our hand that much more satisfying =D

  6. I am honored that you stalk my blog and that my post caused you to pick up this wonderful book. I will say that I totally agree with your assessment of Chase. He's my fav too. Heather's been trying to convince that I should love Kieran. Has that novella coming out soon. We'll see. For now, I don't know him the way I do Chase. I love Chase and I hope he gets to be with Eve. #TeamChase

Like you said, I stalk your blog the most :P I'm curious to see if Heather will change my mind about Kieran, but I'm pretty loyal to my boy Chase, so we'll have to see...Team Chase all the way!
