Sixteen-year-old Raven Weir has a somewhat normal life until she receives a mysterious necklace…a necklace others are willing to kill her to get because it contains the key codes to Atlantis. Now she finds she’s the only one standing between Atlantis and those who want to use the power hidden there to take over the world.

And Zeus is at the head of that line.

On top of worrying about social acceptance at school, Raven has to get control of her growing powers before she harms someone. And it doesn’t help that the alpha Hellhound at school is attracted to her while members of his pack are trying to kill her. And then there’s the whole biological parent issue. Finding out you’re adopted is huge, but discovering you’re actually the daughter of Medusa and Poseidon will definitely cause problems.

Will Raven find the inner strength she needs to survive?

Will she be able to protect Atlantis?

     Guardian of Atlantis is the first book in The Children of Atlantis series by Annie Rachel Cole. When Annie  Rachel Cole first approached me about reviewing this book, I was immediately intrigued by the book's synopsis. Although Guardian of Atlantis lacked that addicting element I crave for in books, I will say it was an enjoyable and good start to the series.

     One of my favourite parts about this novel is the author's spin on Greek Mythology. I am a huge fan of everything Greek- Greek food (Mr. Greek's counts, right?) pictures of Greece, My Big Fate Greek Wedding- you name it, I love it! So Greek Mythology in books is like Christmas in July for me! The interactions between the Gods (especially the epic battle between Zeus and Poseidon) and seeing how Raven deals with the struggles that come along with being the Guardian of Atlantis were so interesting to read about!

    The main character, Raven, was a probably my favourite character of the book- mostly because I understood her a lot better than any of the other characters. She was a funny, strong, and sometimes even sarcastic heroine that I absolutely loved reading about. I was really glad to see Raven gain some confidence towards the end of the novel and I can't wait to see how much her character will change as that confidence continues to flourish!

     I had a hard time really loving Ethan and Raven as a couple. They had a few sweet moments but they were in no way the reason why I enjoyed the book. Seeing as Raven and Ethan are connected in more ways than even Raven realizes, I expected a bit more pizazz *does spirit fingers* between the two of them. In some ways though I can see how this slow start to their relationship can, in the long run, be a very good thing. In YA novels today there's lots of intensity that builds up between couples in a short amount of time- by taking a slower, more gradual approach, I'm hoping Ethan and Raven's ending will be that much sweeter!

Favourite Quotes...

"No one calls me stupid," he said in a lower tone followed by a really low, throaty growl.
"I didn't call you stupid." Raven said a little louder.
"No. One. Calls. Me. Stupid." He crouched down. His eyes turned red.
Raven rolled her eyes. "I think I should've called you a moron because you're acting like one."
"What?"
"Or imbecile? Maybe juvenile delinquent since you broke into the house." Raven couldn't stop herself.
"I'm not a criminal. The door was opened," Jay snarled.

~~~~~
Raven angrily stomped her foot. She bit down hard on her bottom lip to keep from crying out in pain. "Not to self- don't stomp injured leg. That really, really hurts," she mumbled to herself through her clenched teeth.
~~~~~

"Son of-Who did this to you" Anger rolled through every word Ethan spoke.
"And what are you going to do? Go bet him up?" Even though she couldn't see him she was in a lot of pain, she gave Ethan a defiant look. "Been there. Done that. If you think I look bad, you should see the other guy."

Overall...

     Overall Guardian of Atlantis was a great read for any bookworm looking for a YA read that creatively integrates Greek Mythology into a not-so-normal teenager's life! I'm really grateful I got the opportunity to read this book and I'm looking forward to book two! Have you read Guardian of Atlantis? Do you love Greek food :P ?
