Everything is changing . . .

Turning sixteen can be hell, especially if everyone in town thinks your mother killed herself and your sister. All Kira Callahan wants to do is swim, hang out with her best friend, Sean, and ignore the kids who torment her at school. That is, until one day when she gets invited to a party. For three minutes her life is wonderful—she even kisses Sean in the driveway. Then somebody spikes her drink at the party and some girls from out of town lure her into the ocean and hold her underwater.

Kira soon discovers that the group of wild teenagers who have come to visit Crescent Moon Bay are not as innocent as they seem. In fact, nothing is as it seems—not the mysterious deaths of her sister and mother, not her heritage, not even her best friend. And everything seems to hinge on the ancient Celtic legends that her mother used to tell her as a child.

     Fathom is the first novel in The Chronicles of Crescent Moon Bay series by Merrie Destefano. The novel revolves around a particular mythological creature that, although a topic I've been reading a lot about lately, it is presented in a very unique way. (I'll try not to be too specific because finding out what mythological creature I'm talking about is a huge part of the plot)!

     Kira's life has not been easy since her mother killed both herself and her sister. Not only does she have to deal with the constant whispers at school, but at home she faces her grandmother and father's watchful eyes -observing Kira for any signs that could indicate her turning out just like her mother.

     Fathom is told through two POVs- Kira and Caleb's. Kira's character was extremely relatable. You really get a sense of her emotions, and I found myself on multiple occasions having the same deep feelings Kira was experiencing- which is something authors aren't always able to do. On the other hand, although we also read through Caleb's POV, he's still a huge question mark (at least for me). His character is so mysterious, and I'm looking forward to unraveling more about his character in the next book.

     There is a bit of a love triangle-ish element to Fathom. The relationships in this novel are entirely sweet and aren't really the main focus of the plot. I'm still not quite sure who I like more with Kira- Sean or Caleb. Even though we see a lot more Kira and Sean moments that are cute and adorable, I still don't feel like I've seen enough between Kira and Caleb. I still feel like there's something there between the both of them (especially after the events that happen towards the end of the novel).

Favourite Quotes...

"The strangest things happen when you're not looking. Water boils when you're in the other room, cats scratch the sofa when you're sleeping, teachers decide to give a pop quiz hen you've been out sick. And apparently guys become best friends if you stay in the bathroom too long."

~~~~~
"He was quiet. He was thinking. That's how Sean was. I planned and he thought about things for a long time. Together, we were slightly dangerous."
Overall...
     Overall Fathom was filled with a unique storyline, unexpected revelations, and an ending that has left me sad, happy and anxious for book two. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for these characters! Have you read Fathom? What was your favourite part about this book? Be sure to let me know in the comments below! Keep Reading!
