Clockwork Princess By: Cassandra Clare Review

Clockwork Princess (Infernal Devices #3)                                   Author: Cassandra Clare                       Publisher: McElderry Book          Pages: 568                                            Rating: 5/5
Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy
Tessa Gray should be happy - aren't all brides happy?Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute.A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her.
     Clockwork Princess is the third and final installment in the Infernal Devices trilogy by author Cassandra Clare. The Infernal Devices is a prequel series to Cassandra Clare's other series, The Mortal Instruments . Clockwork Princess doesn't need much introduction because I think a majority of you out there are as invested in all of Clare's books as I am :P. I was so excited to read Clockwork Princess and now that I've finished, all I want to do is cry because Tessa, Will and Jem's story is now over....kind of ;P

     Although Clockwork Princess is an awesomely-astounding 568 pages, the story doesn't drag at all! There is a lot of action and plot development squeezed into this book, making it not only drag-less, but also very addicting and impossible to stop reading (like pretty much ALL of Cassandra's novels)! There was a particular worm battle (yes....that is not a spelling error....I do mean a WORM-BATTLE) that was intense, and hilarious at the same time because, you know, it's a battle with a worm! :P It always amazes me how Cassandra Clare manages to fit such great comedy into these emotionally and physically intense novels!

     Once again, readers of both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments will love all of the connections between the two series that are discovered in Clockwork Princess. The overlapping of the two series makes these novels very intricate and unique, and I have no doubt Clare will continue to establish these bridges with the next three series in the Shadowhunter world.

     The love-triangle between Tessa, Jem and Will is a bit more of a focal point in Clockwork Princess. Since it's the last book in the trilogy, we as the readers know we're all going to find out who Tessa will end up with, so there's a lot of tension between not only the three characters, but with YOU and the three characters as well! I'm a huge supporter of Team Will (Love Jem...but not with Tessa) but I was even touched by some of the Tessa-Jem scenes (though I LOVED the Tessa-Will scenes a lot more...not gonna lie)! The one thing I will say that kind of bothered me about Clockwork Princess was how many times I had to hear Tessa say how much she loved both Jem and Will equally. I don't know about you guys, but in the previous two books, I never got those feelings from Tessa! To me, it always seemed as if Tessa had a true love for Will and a more brotherly love for Jem, but because he was sick she stayed with him to make his last days perfect (I especially felt this when Tessa burned her hand after telling Will she couldn't be with him).

     I could not have asked for a better ending for Clockwork Princess....the epilogue, however, still has me feeling mixed emotions. While reading Clockwork Princess, I proudly refrained from shedding a tear, but within the first page of the epilogue.....I was bawling. Waterfalls were running down my face and I was sniffling with at least every other word that I read! The best way I can describe it is like this: it was as if Cassandra shattered my heart, glued the pieces back together so it was functional again, and then asked me, "are you ok?" Well yes my heart may be working, but I don't think it will ever be the same again! Is this comparison dramatic? Yes. Is it 100% true? *sniffles* YES! *continues bawling* Whether your Team Will or Jem, I don't think there's anyway you won't be both happy and devastated for them both. The epilogue was beautifully sad while at the same time being sadly beautiful-- my words do not do it justice. Here are some things I will reveal about the epilogue that I think readers should keep in mind:
  • I'm 90% sure, not certain (you never can be where Cassandra Clare is involved) that certain parts of the epilogue take place after City of Heavenly Fire, meaning something happens in COHF that really impacts Tessa's life! The curiosity is killing me!
  • I read a review online shortly after reading Clockwork Princess in which the reviewer questioned why there was an epilogue at all...well I think it's pretty much essential to not necessarily The Infernal Devices, but to The Mortal Instruments, and more specifically The Dark Artifices (and that's not even mentioning the new series that have been announced). I definitely think that there are particular characters from the epilogue that will somehow be involved in the future series. If there was no epilogue there may not have been as much heartache at that moment, but we would have been very confused as to how (and more importantly which) characters from the historic period of The Infernal Devices, possibly make their way into the modern Shadowhunter times.
  • Spoiler Alert-Do NOT continue if you have not read Clockwork Princess: Does anybody find it so unbelievably amazing how Jace is related to Tessa, Will AND Jem?! ...As if I could love Jace even more! *sigh* (End Of Spoiler)
Favourite Quotes...

“A very magnanimous statement, Gideon,” said Magnus.
“I’m Gabriel.”

Magnus waved a hand. “All Lightwoods look the same to me.”

~~~~~
Gabriel’s green eyes sought Will. “It was demon pox, wasn’t it? You know all about it, don’t you? Aren’t you some sort of expert?”
“Well, you needn’t act as if I invented it,” said Will.
~~~~~

“Life is a book and there are a thousand pages I have not yet read.”

Overall...

     Overall, I was so happy with the way Cassandra Clare finished off this trilogy. Clockwork Princess is filled with action, love, happiness, tragedy and, in true Cassandra Clare fashion, witty, laugh out loud humor. It is the kind of book you'll get jealous over the people who have not read it yet, because you'll just want to relive the story all over again like it was your first time reading it. Once again I am counting down the days to the next Shadowhunter book! If the ending of Infernal Devices left me crying like a baby for 30 minutes, I don't even want to know how I'm going to react to the ending of the six book Mortal Instrument series that started it all, City of Heavenly Fire (set to release March 1, 2014 according to Goodreads). Have you read Clockwork Princess? What did you think about the epilogue? Be sure to let me know in the comments below (and please let people know if you are going to mention any spoilers)! Keep Reading!

  1. I agree with you 100% about the love being equally. I found that to be a bunch of crap. The way it was presented made it seem as if her one true love was Will and Jem would always be second no matter what. Her reasoning behind staying with Jem after Will confessed was like might as well stay with Jem now since no way in hell is she going to be with Will now. It was like pity love. At least that's my take on it.

    1. I totally am with you on that-- I mean I have no doubt Tessa loved Jem, but I found it to be very emphasized in the first two books that she was madly in love with Will. The whole "I equally love them both" was soooo not the vibe I got throughout the series!
