Memory Lane Monday: Wake by Amanda Hocking

Yes, it is that time of the week. The day we dread and wish would never come- Mondays. *Wipes tear* But have no fear, Memory Lane Monday is here! Every Monday, here at TheYABookworm, I'll do a special post called Memory Lane Monday. What's that you ask? Memory Lane Monday is a once-a-week post where I (or any other bloggers that wish to participate)  choose one book that I've previously read to be featured on that day. From the book chosen, I will pick two of my favourite quotes and write a little blurb containing my quick thoughts on the book. The books that I choose will not be books I've reviewed- since I've read so many books, I want to share with you my opinions on ones that I won't get the chance to fully review (because seriously, rereading dozens of books would take a year...or two)! Be sure to participate by leaving your "Memory Lane Monday" in the comments, or a link to your blog post with the hash-tag #YAMemoryLaneMonday on twitter :D

This Week's Memory Lane Monday...
Wake By: Amanda Hocking
Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.
Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.
Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

Top Two Favourite Quotes...
#1  “You really do hate me, don't you? I mean, destroying someone's ice-cream cone? That's vicious."

Her cheeks reddened. "I didn't see you there. Honestly." She wiped at his shirt more frantically, as if she could prevent it from staining if she rubbed hard enough.
"Oh, now I see your plan, and it's far more devious than I thought." Daniel smirked. "You were looking for an excuse to grope me.”

#2  "I'm a Mermaid?"...
"Not exactly,....we're sirens."
"Whats' the difference?" Gemma asked.
"Well, for starters, mermaids don't exist, and we do."

With mermaids (or should I say sirens) becoming more and more common in YA, Wake by Amanda Hocking is definitely a book you should consider picking up. The synopsis makes it seem like you'll be reading solely about Gemma but really, this series is focused on both Gemma and her sister, Harper. Wake turns a very cliche storyline (you know, three mean girls that suddenly take interest in what the main character thinks of herself as ordinary but really she's gorgeous) and builds on it with complex characters, mysterious disappearances, and the scary, creepy unknowns that come with having sirens in town (emphasis on the creepy! Think seducing males and eating human flesh creepy)!

The sister dynamic between Gemma and Harper is incredibly entertaining and works really well. Gemma and Harper are complete opposites but they compliment each other in the best way possible. I specifically enjoyed that there was a love interest for both sisters, although, I enjoy the Harper and Daniel duo a hundred times more than the Gemma and Alex one. I think in general I'm just able to connect to Harper more than Gemma because she's the more mature and practical character. I found myself on numerous occasions anticipating the return to Harper's POV (and I don't just say that because her and Daniel together create sparks that make my heart do funny things ;P)!

Despite Wake being a supernatural book, it is a pretty quick read. I hope as the series progresses that we do get more insight into the siren history and that character growth will allow me to better enjoy Gemma and her relationship with Alex. Have you read Wake? Which sister are you able to connect with the most? Be sure to let me know in the comments below! Keep Reading!

This trailer for Wake is one of the best book trailers I've ever seen-- it looks like a trailer for a TV series!
