Memory Lane Monday: Immortal City by Scott Speer

Yes, it is that time of the week. The day we dread and wish would never come- Mondays. *Wipes tear* But have no fear, Memory Lane Monday is here! Every Monday, here at TheYABookworm, I'll do a special post called Memory Lane Monday. What's that you ask? Memory Lane Monday is a once-a-week post where I (or any other bloggers that wish to participate)  choose one book that I've previously read to be featured on that day. From the book chosen, I will pick two of my favourite quotes and write a little blurb containing my quick thoughts on the book. The books that I choose will not be books I've reviewed- since I've read so many books, I want to share with you my opinions on ones that I won't get the chance to fully review (because seriously, rereading dozens of books would take a year...or two)! Be sure to participate by leaving your "Memory Lane Monday" in the comments, or a link to your blog post with the hash-tag #YAMemoryLaneMonday on twitter :D

This Week's Memory Lane Monday...
Immortal City By: Scott Speer
Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them.
He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect - everyone except for Madison Montgomery.
Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.
Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat & and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Top Two Favourite Quotes...
#1 “Did you ever even consider that I might love you, you stubborn, impossible girl?”

#2 “How did you learn to drive like that?" Gwen yelled over the howl of six hundred horses.

"Watching Jacks." She gunned the engine and slipped around another car.

"What?"

"You know, watching his shifting."
Gwen gasped. "You've been looking at his SHIFTER?”

Immortal City is the first installment in the Immortal series by author Scott Speer. The Immortal City is just one of the many books on my TBR shelf that I finally decided to take the time to read and I have to say, I was quite impressed to have come across an angel novel that is unlike any angel novel I've read before (and I've read many)! Immortal City is filled with sarcasm, humour, death, betrayal, lust and glamour that a results in a book that is hard to put down.

In this world, angels are celebrities. They're the faces of ads, wear designer clothing, have screaming fans, are stalked by paparazzi and are hired by the wealthy to be their Guardian Angels and protect them from death. I found this whole concept of angels being paid for their "life saving abilities" so intriguing--it also made Jackson and Maddy's relationship more unusual because Maddy is not wealthy enough to afford those services nor does she agree with angel's selective healing.

The whole "celebrity/rockstar falls in love with waitress/female-living-non-extravagant-life" story-line has been seen before, and so has the "angels are taking over the world" bit. However when these two story-lines come together, the Immortal City is born! With Jackson set to become the youngest angel ever to become a Guardian, and Maddy stuck waitressing to help her Uncle get by, these two individuals can not be more different. The plot becomes very interesting when these two opposites happen to meet and begin spending more and more time together despite the fact that angel-human relationships are frowned upon. The chemistry between Maddy and Jackson has a devouring quality that makes you question how a relationship between the two of them would ever work (even though you are secretly waiting for it to happen)! Their status by the end of the novel has been anxious to get my hands on book two to see where these two are heading.

I'd most definitely recommend Immortal City to anyone looking for a new take on the angel world. The romance plays a dominant part in the plot and the lurking and unknown angel murder on the loose gives Immortal City that little bit of intensity. Have you read Immortal City? What do you think about angels charging money for their services? Be sure to let me know in the comments below! Keep Reading!
