Read My Review- HERE!
I am so excited to share today's post with all of you! As some of you may know, back in August I reviewed a YA Contemporary novel called, Effortless With You. I ended up loving it and have gone back to it periodically since then to re-read some of my favourite scenes!

I am so honoured to be here today with a special guest post & deleted scene from Lizzy Charles as we celebrate the release of her novel, Effortless With You, in paperback! I encourage you all to pick this one up if you're looking for a good contemporary read!

Deleted Scene from Effortless With You, Guest post by author Lizzy Charles

One of the most challenging parts of writing a novel is balancing the details of a character and their past. After three years of getting to know my main character in Effortless With You, Lucy, you could say I know a little too much about her. Let’s see, as a child, her favorite part of her mother’s therapy appointments was playing at McDonalds across the sreet and having a sausage biscuit with egg. She has a chunk of her hair that won’t curl and she’s always wanted a dog. None of those details made it into the final book because they simply weren’t all that important and other fun details won their part into the novel.

Balancing character details can be a challenge, but what’s worse is balancing their past. The question I’m constantly asking myself is Okay, what does the reader really need to know? Without that question, I’d ramble for ages (and I’m pretty sure my readers would get annoyed). But it’s painful to delete scenes from a novel, especially when they give a clear window into a character’s past.

So, to celebrate the release of Effortless With You in print, I want to share one of my favorite flashbacks from Lucy’s past. For those who haven’t yet read Effortless With You, a large part of the novel focuses on a girl recovering herself a few years after being bullied. The original drafts included brief flashbacks of Lucy’s teammates bullying her. Unfortunately, due to balancing characters and my plot line, I was unable to keep these flashbacks in my final version. What’s awesome though? I can share one here with you!

“Whore,” she says before spitting in my face. I keep my eyes closed, praying she’ll leave. Her hands make a sticky slap against my favorite thing. Crap. It’s coming. I throw up my hands to catch the basketball she’s chucked at me. “Just leave, okay? I’m giving you an out.”

“I can’t. Coach T. won’t let me.” Horrible Coach. As long as we win, he doesn’t care what happens behind the scenes.

“Well then.” She steps in close and my arms tremble. “I guess I’ll just have to take it into my own hands. Can’t play if you’re injured, right?” Her hand tangles itself in my hair and I scream. The rest watch, smirking, as they surround me.

“Freshman should not be allowed on the varsity team. You took away my last season.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”I beg, sobbing as she violently yanks my hair again. “Stop!”

“My chance for a scholarship.” Bang, my skull hits the metal of the locker. “My chance to shine.” Bang. My legs buckle. Bang, I fall, the skin on my hip searing as the locker handle rips into it. Another basketball is chucked from across the room, hitting me in the shoulder.

“This year is going to be hell,” she whispers to me.

The trembling overwhelms then as the room spins. My breath catches in my chest, the air won’t move. No, breathe. Push through this. I fight, keeping my eyes above the water, desperately clinging to consciousness and air.
