Ten Things You Don't Know About WRITTEN IN THE STARS

10 Things People Don't Know About Written in the Stars

  1. The name of the main character in Written in the Stars, Naila, is an Arabic word that means the achiever, or the successful one.
  2. The working title was initially Hands of Henna, but was later changed to Written in the Stars because it captures the theme of destiny present in the novel.
  3. Approximately five hundred cups of chai were consumed in writing Written in the Stars.
  4. The small town in Pakistan that Naila lives in while at her uncle’s home is completely fictional but loosely based on my parent’s ancestral village.
  5. Naila goes to a lot of people’s houses for lunches and dinners while in Pakistan. This is actually very common; people visiting their ancestral homes are often invited by every relative near and far and can end up spending every single day at a lunch or dinner party.
  6. Three laptops were used in the writing of this novel. I have a very bad touch with laptops but thankfully I was very good at backing up my files along the way.
  7. I get asked from time to time if the girl on the cover of Written in the Stars is me—very flattering, but alas, she is definitely not me!
  8. I initially began writing this novel in third person past tense but changed it to first person present tense to capture the immediacy of Naila's situation.
  9. Chapter thirty-eight was the hardest chapter to write and one I still cannot bring myself to reread.
  10. While the story is entirely fictional it is based on people I knew growing up who were pressured and/or coerced into marriages against their will.

  1. I read the book yesterday and it became an instant favorite. You have to read it Caitlin! Written in the Stars is unlike any book I've ever read before. It brings in so many new concepts that our western culture is completely foreign to. Make sure you have a box of tissues near you because this one is a heart-breaker! I hope you enjoy it :)
