Memory Lane Monday: Forbidden By: Tabitha Suzuma

Yes, it is that time of the week. The day we dread and wish would never come- Mondays. *Wipes tear* But have no fear, Memory Lane Monday is here! Every Monday, here at TheYABookworm, I'll do a special post called Memory Lane Monday. What's that you ask? Memory Lane Monday is a once-a-week post where I (or any other bloggers that wish to participate)  choose one book that I've previously read to be featured on that day. From the book chosen, I will pick two of my favourite quotes and write a little blurb containing my quick thoughts on the book. The books that I choose will not be books I've reviewed- since I've read so many books, I want to share with you my opinions on ones that I won't get the chance to fully review (because seriously, rereading dozens of books would take a year...or two)! Be sure to participate by leaving your "Memory Lane Monday" in the comments, or a link to your blog post with the hash-tag #YAMemoryLaneMonday on twitter :D

This Weeks Memory Lane Monday...
Forbidden By: Tabitha Suzuma

Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives--and the way they understand each other so completely--has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.

Top Two Favourite Quotes...
#1 “He is my soul mate, my fresh air, the reason I look forward to getting up every morning.”

#2 “I might appear confident and chatty, but I spend most of my time laughing at jokes I don't find funny, saying things I don't really mean - because at the end of the day that's what we're all trying to do: fit in, one way or another, desperately trying to pretend we're all the same.”

It's Monday, yayyy (Unless you work for a living....then BOOOOO) but since I don't have school, and currently no job- it's a good day :D This weeks Memory Lane Monday is Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. It's quite a special choice for this week, because unlike previous weeks, I'm remembering this book for all the wrong reasons....You see, I am not a fan of this book. At all. If you took the time the read the synopsis above, then it's pretty clear to you that this entire book is about incest- a forbidden romance between a brother and sister.

When I first picked up this book I really was intrigued by the plot- I bought it so I could find out how these siblings could possibly get a  happily-ever-after. Well, without spoiling too much...they don't. It was quite depressing actually- and this is primarily the reason I don't like this book. Why would I want to read something that leaves me depressed and sad? Not only that but the "taboo" between Lochan and Maya was a little too heavy for me. I mean, I've read books containing incest (City of Bones by Cassandra Clare) and I've loved it....but Forbidden didn't do anything for me.

The sexual content in this book was a bit awkward for my taste because for some reason I could not connect with these characters at all. I think if I could have developed a liking for them as a couple, this could have been a very different "Memory Lane." But unfortunately I have to say that if I was reviewing this, it would've gotten a 2/5, possibly 1/5. That being said, if you like to read about incest and hardships between two siblings then this book is for you. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but someone with different tastes could have a totally different opinion on this book.

If you managed to stay with me and read through my little rant, then I thank-you! I promise next week I'll post a more "loving" Memory Lane post :P See you next Monday!

  1. This author kind of sounds like V.C. Andrews with the incest and all. Have you read Andrews books?

Great review. Thanks for posting. I am now a fellow Bookworm!

  2. This book does sound interesting, but I have heard that it is a little heavy and depressing...not really sure if it would be my cup of tea, really.
I love your idea for a Memorable Monday feature - I read loads of books but I don't always have time to review them all! I should join in with this! :D

    1. That would be great! I started it mainly for that reason- I have so many books that I've read but have no time to review! If you end up doing a Memory Lane Monday then let me know and I'll post a link to yours on one of mine =)
